The second generation of Renault Zoé has become more versatile. That’s what WLTP autonomy and an optional fast charger promise. But, unfortunately, this is not enough to make a long journey.

Released in 2019, the second generation of Renault Zoé corrected many of the shortcomings of the first version. And this is especially relevant in terms of versatility, since its platform, as old as it is, allowed it to get a battery with a capacity of 52 kWh. According to the WLTP standard, the combined autonomy can go up to 395 km, or at best 386 km with the R135 engine. On our long motorway journey between Lyon and Paris, we saw consumption of 23kWh/100km to be exact, or 226km of range before running out of fuel. Or 158 km with 80 to 10% load. But the ratio of autonomy / recharging time is clearly not in his favor.

Renault Zoé charging curve: useful full tank in 53 minutes

You have to put €1,000 on the table to take advantage of fast charging on the Renault Zoé. At this price, it will offer a Combo-CCS slot in the muzzle, allowing for a maximum output of 50kW DC. A power that we have never encountered during various measurements, the maximum recorded power is 45 kW.

Despite the actual recharge capacity being slightly lower than promised, the recharge curve stays right up to around 45-50% before starting to slowly drop off. At 80% load, we recorded a residual power of 24 kW, which is 46% less than the observed peak of 45 kW. The difference is ultimately a relative average, but the value is very low in absolute terms.

So don’t expect miracles in terms of charging speed, and you’ll have to wait a very long time at charging stations. And you’ll need to stay there for exactly 53 more minutes to reach 10-80%. Twenty-five additional minutes will be required to reach the 100% mark (including 12 minutes at 80-90%). After all, a full tank requires 1 hour and 18 minutes, which is 15 minutes longer than the e-208, which suffers from too slow charging.

Autonomy was restored: 99 km in 30 minutes

There is nothing surprising in the comparison of the obtained autonomy with the recharging time: Renault Zoé is at the very end of our ranking! It takes 30 minutes to get 99 km of range, while the e-208 only needs 15 minutes to get the same range. After only one hour of charging, after driving 171 km, in most cases it will be possible to disconnect the car from the grid, even if it is impossible to take it back again. Because as we saw during the first episode of this supertest, the Zoé can quickly get greedy on the highway depending on the terrain.

Cost of charging Renault Zoé R135

The terminals we connected to showed an average of 54.24kWh for a full Renault Zoé. The cost of top-ups, as always, will depend on the operator’s tariff schedule. In Electra, which promises to freeze prices, the recharge is most interesting with the full amount close to 24 euros (17 euros at 10-80%). Things get tougher at Ionity as the price rises to almost €37 (€26 at 10-80%). Therefore, we can easily count on a direct usage cost of €11.50/100 km on the motorway with the most expensive operator.

During our trip we made three top-up stops for a total of €59.27 excluding badge fees. Doing a domestic charge on arrival to recover the initial rate would increase the total cost to €64.70, giving a final cost of €12.94/100km for this 500km journey.

Like the Peugeot e-208, the Renault Zoé does not have an on-board route planner. It simply lets itself know that the destination is beyond the reach of the rest of the autonomy, symbolized by the halo on the map. You will then have to manually search for the nearest terminals. From then on, we trusted our judgment and our solid habits on this trip. Note that Chargemap and ABRP are very cautious for this route, with 5 stops scheduled for the former and 4 for the latter. It should also be noted that the charging time is also pessimistic: 2 hours 12 according to Chargemap and 2 hours 30 according to ABRP.

The Renault Zoé finally needed three stops to charge. Nothing new with a range of almost 230 km, which allows it just enough to hop from one station to another. And with it, visitors will have time to go around every corner of the recreation areas at the expense of charging time. Even with a clear strategy, stops are long. And we stayed plugged in for exactly 2 hours 11, bringing our total travel time to 6 hours 43. That’s the longest time of all, 1 hour 11 more than the Peugeot e-208!

There are no evaluative opinions here, just a demonstration of what the ratio of battery life and charging power actually provides. Of course, it’s not for nothing that this city car is regularly used in reports to charge at the limit of an electric car on long trips. Still, the Renault Zoé is a good city car that promises some form of versatility. Especially on a day-to-day basis, with a smooth ride and a zen vibe, although highway range is limited. But it is its fast charging that destroys any ambitions to travel behind the wheel. This is one of the missions of the next Renault 5, which will soon replace the Zoé.
